Anniversaries of DNU scientists

Akimov

May 16 marks the 135th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Akimov (1886–1955), a zoologist and professor at Dnipro National University.
Vadim Manyuk,  the associate professor of DNU, writes about M.Akimov in his book "Ecological alphabet of Prydniprovya": "An outstanding figure in the environmental movement of Dnipropetrovsk region, one of its founders, a zoologist  worked at Dnipropetrovsk National University from the moment of  its foundation  where he was one of the organizers of the Department of Zoology, since 1925 he  taught a course of  ecology."
Mikhail Pavlovich Akimov was born on May 16, 1886 in the village of Kalinovsky, Luhansk region, in the family of a mining engineer.  From 1908 to 1914 he  studied at the Department of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Kharkiv University.  From November 1, 1926, and until the early 30's, at the suggestion of Professor L.V.Reinhard, he became the head of  Dnepropetrovsk Regional Inspectorate for the Protection of Natural Monuments, as well as a member of the Ukrainian Committee for the Protection of Natural Monuments.
Professor M.P.Akimov published one of the most famous books at that time - "Let's Protect Natural Monuments" (materials on nature protection of  Middle Dnipro region) (1930), which is  in the library's collections. The library also has rare scientific collections of the Faculty of Biology and collections of abstracts of 1938, 1948, 1955 where the works of Mikhail Pavlovich are  published.  In 1959, after his death, the book "Ecology of Animals" was published, which still has not lost its value and is in demand among teachers and students of Dnipro National University. The scientist paid great attention to involving schoolchildren in environmental activities.  M. Akimov conducted natural history excursions for the youth. 
M.P.Akimov died after a long illness on October 23, 1.
