May 1 marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Viktorovich Polyakov (1946-2020) - a scientist-mechanic and mathematician, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, rector of DNU (1998-2020).
Mykola Viktorovych was one of the leading scientists in Ukraine in the field of liquids and gases research. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal "Dnipropetrovsk University Bulletin", author and co-author of more than 500 works, including 14 monographs, 12 textbooks and 2 textbooks. His scientific work is well known not only in Ukraine but also abroad (the USA, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Ireland, China, Israel, France). He is an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1998); awarded the Order of Merit of I (2006), II (2003) and III (2000) classes, the Defender of the Motherland Medal (1999) and other awards. In 2013 he received the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of education in the nomination "Higher Education" for a series of works "Educational, methodological, scientific and technical support for the development of rocket and space education in Ukraine and its integration into the international educational space" (as a part of the team). He was awarded the prize of M.K.Yangel National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2005) for a series of works on hydrodynamics and flight dynamics of aircrafts. In 2015, Mykola Viktorovych was elected an honorary citizen of Dnipro. This is by no means a complete list of his awards.
He went from a student to the head of a classical university and headed it for 22 years. He treated the library with respect and reverence. At meetings he often noted the role of books in the educational process. He took an active part in international, national and regional events that took place in the library. Mykola Viktorovych was a long-term reader and donator. His scientific achievements and human energy will forever leave their mark in the history of the university.
